Burundi Twaranyuzwe Kayanza additional information.

Burundi, the Heart of Africa. It’s called this for its heart-shaped outline and its central location on the African continent. And as its 600,000–800,000 coffee growing families could tell you, coffee is in many ways the heart of Burundi.

Large parts of Burundi have excellent conditions for growing coffee: good terroir, a favorable climate, and more. In fact, specialty coffee production is on the increase in this tiny country, despite armed conflict and high poverty rates. Burundian single origins have demonstrated high potential, and coffee producers here are striving to improve their agricultural practices.

Burundi has five main coffee producing regions: Buyenzi (where our coffee is from), Kirimiro, Mumirwa, Bweru, and Bugesera. That isn’t to say you’ll never find coffee outside of these regions; however, these are the biggest, most common ones, and they are also known for their quality crops.

ABOUT THE TWARANYUZWE COOPERATIVE

Twaranyuzwe means “We Understood”, but the implied meaning is “the coffee farm is a benefit in daily life”. The process of privatisation of the coffee sector in Burundi began when coffee growers were organised in associations under the big national organisation known as National Confederacy Of The Associations Of Coffee Growers

As this association cannot compete with the private investors, they made the decision to transform their association into a cooperative, which can fulfill at the same time the social and economic mission.

This is the way Twaranyuzwe Cooperative was born in 2006, with as main activity, collecting the production (cherries) of the members, to be forwarded in their existing coffee washing station to avoid cases of theft during weighing and payment.

We were able to buy this coffee with the help of Cuprima Coffee, who is sourcing the best specialty coffee available.
